Why is dietary β-glucans costly to animal performance?

The nutritional value of grains and other raw materials is negatively affected by their dietary fibre content. One of the key components of soluble and insoluble dietary fibre include β-glucans, found in plant cell walls (see table below). Beta-glucans are structural components of cell walls and are predominantly found in grains such as barley, oats and rye. Typically, β-glucans form a linear backbone with 1-3 β-glyosidic bonds but vary with respect to molecular mass, solubility, viscosity, branching structure and gelation properties, causing diverse physiological effects in animals especially poultry.

The negative effects of soluble and insoluble dietary fibre include:
  • Acting as a physical barrier to the animal’s own enzymes, encapsulating useful nutrients.
  • Increasing digesta viscosity leading to
    • Decreased feed intake by slowing the passage rate of digesta in the gut
    • Reduced nutrient utilisation as the animal’s own enzymes cannot easily reach their substrate.
  • Causing valuable energy and protein/amino acids to be wasted as the animal needlessly produces more of its own enzymes that are inappropriate to deal with dietary fibre.
  • Wet litter or soft/watery faeces due to detrimental changes to the gut microflora.
Poorly digested feed reduces animal performance, increases the costs of production and lowers profitability.

How can BG-Glucan help?
BG-Glucan is a preparation of endo- 1, 3(4)-β-glucanase enzyme produced by from the fermentation products of Trichoderma Citrinoviride. BG-Gucan targets the antinutrient β-glucans found in the fibre in grains and other raw materials. The enzyme catalyzes the hydrolysis of β-glucosan backbone in cereal grains efficiently into glucose and other low molecular materials, so as to reduce the feed. By targeting these fibre components BG-Glucan improves digestion by helping release nutrients; reducing digesta viscosity; reducing the production of excessive secretions into the gut (reduced endogenous losses) and improves litter quality and faecal consistency.
Benefits
In feed, it can promote the release of nutrients in feed cell, reduce β-glucan viscosity in animal's intestinal tract, eliminate anti-nutritional factors, improve animal digestion and growth and increase feed benefit.
Storage
Transport and store in cool dry place and avoid direct exposure to sunlight or moisture. Stored below 15in original sealed package, activity of solid enzyme remains stable for a period of up to 12 months.
